KNOWLEDGE EMPOWERMENT IN THE MILLENNIUM

A BRIEF OVERVIEW

November 1996 marks the beginning of the history of the Multimedia University (MMU), the first private university in Malaysia, formerly known as Universiti Telekom (Unitele) in Melaka. Later in March 1997, the University was once again honoured to be given the task to set up the first multimedia university in Malaysia, located at the heart of Cyberjaya, the intelligent township area of the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC). 

Envisioned to be a world class University, MMU offers quality education in the fields of telecommunications engineering, multimedia, computers, electronics, creative digital art, animation, information technology and management in both the Cyberjaya and Melaka Campus. Its official launch on July 9th, 1999 signifies the enormous task entrusted to the University in carrying out its challenging roles to support the growth and sustenance of the MSC, and spur the nation into the new era of the information age.

Multimedia University as a whole is managed by Universiti Telekom Sdn Bhd, or UTSB, which is a subsidiary of Telekom Malaysia Berhad, Malaysia's giant telecommunications corporate organisation.

TEACHING & LEARNING

All academic staff use the multimedia mode of instruction, through which course materials of all subjects are stored on-line, accessible via the Intranet at any time and place in the world. The university is also in the midst of producing a new teaching-learning methodology known as the Multimedia Learning System, with its full implementation is envisaged to be at the end of the year 2001. The objective of this system is to explore the most innovative techniques of web-based teaching and learning using multimedia tools. The other facilities available in the university include:

ADMINISTRATION

To date, the University has developed 80 modules in total, which can be categorised into the student, financial and administrative module, that fully utilising the Internet and web. For example, students are able to evaluate the Faculty teaching staff using the online Academic Evaluation System. 

Staff is to clock in/out using the Web Diary, which also automatically calculates their monthly overtime. Examination results can be accessed by students from home, the public can purchase books from the Internet Bookshop and the latest addition, the use of the smart card as an E-purse and to monitor all movements within the campus. The University's internet radio known as Radio MMU is currently being accessed day and night by internet users all over the world.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

On the Research and Development front, Multimedia University is strongly committed to excel in the R&D field, to contribute towards the nation's development, especially in Multimedia and IT. To meet the need for extensive R&D, the university has established centres of excellence spanning areas such as broadband and networking, virtual reality, e-commerce, computer animation, cyberlaw, interpretation and expression, and many others. The university's research efforts have shown encouraging results where approximately 5 patents are in line for registration and a number of breakthroughs have been achieved. The R & D efforts are further advocated with the synergistic links that MMU has with various key industry players such as NTT, Alcatel, Lucent Technologies, IBM, Silicon Graphics, Inc., INTEL, Ericsson and Microsoft.

INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY

MMU welcomes aspiring students from all over the world, as we believe that a multicultural, multinational campus will enrich the social and cultural diversities of students' experiences. Students of MMU will have the opportunity to meet people from various cultural understanding among themselves. At present, MMU enjoys the company of international students from Bosnia, Malawi, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Libya, Turkey, Bangladesh, Iran, China, Sudan and South Africa.
