TESTIMONIALS: Maryam Ahmad Ali
Hospitality............
During my first year studying on the Dubai Women's College Travel & Tourism Higher Diploma programme I worked as a trainee at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, a 5 star luxury hotel newly opened in Dubai.
I worked in many different departments of the hotel during my 4 weeks internship including Front Office and Reception, Communication Centre (Telephone Operator), Housekeeping, Reservations, Guest Relations & Concierge, Banquet Sales and Sales & Marketing.
One of the duties I particularly enjoyed while working in the Housekeeping department was the decorating of the lobby area of the hotel for a special New Year's Eve party. I helped light some of the 12,000 candles that lit the whole area and created a unique and special atmosphere in the hotel.
While working at Reception, I worked with Miss Ayesha Nasib, a graduate from our Dubai Women's College Travel & Tourism programme who is now working as a full time employee in the hotel. Ayesha helped me learn how to apply the excellent customer service skills we had studied at college for guests checking in to the hotel. I enjoyed also the opportunity of following the hotel checking out procedures for guests departing from the hotel and escorting guests to different areas of the hotel to inspect the variety of rooms and suites available.
In the Sales & Marketing department I observed that the Grand Hyatt targets both the leisure and corporate sectors of the market and focuses also on international conferences. While working in this department I attended a Dubai Women's Business Group luncheon meeting with a member of the sales team and together we promoted the Grand Hyatt giving details about the different conference rooms and facilities available.
I really enjoyed my four weeks in the Grand Hyatt hotel and learned so much more about how a hotel operates by working there.

Event Tourism..............
Dubai is one of the world's most exciting new travel destinations. It depends nowadays on the tourism industry. There are many events that have been held in Dubai and there are very many important projects that are under construction.
As a national and a student who is studying travel and tourism it is part of my major to participate and become involved in many of these important events.
One of the most exciting and worldwide events that took place in Dubai was the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Conference (Dubai 2003- IMF) in September 2003. My role in this event was to participate in the cultural part in which I was able to explain to the delegates who came for the IMF event about our culture and religion. Besides that it helped them to understand more about our traditions and to experience the Arabic hospitality.
Also, as a volunteer for the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding, I worked with a group of my fellow Dubai Women's College Travel & Tourism students to plan some traditional events such as an Arabic wedding and Iftar evenings during Ramadan. For the Arabic wedding event we showed two kinds of weddings, the old and the new. We demonstrated to the invited guests (from all different countries) by acting how the Emirati people were celebrating weddings in the past and how they celebrate weddings now (some things have changed a little since traditional times). The Iftar evening was a religious event where we showed our guests how the Muslims break their fasting during Ramadan and how they pray. Also the guests had a chance to taste the delicious Arabic dishes we eat when we break our fast. The aim of these events was to make the expatriates who have just come to live in Dubai more familiar with the country they and going to live in and to become aware of our culture.
